HNTB Electrical Engineer - Traction Power in Chelmsford, Massachusetts

What We're Looking For

Our Chelmsford, MA office is seeking an entry-level Electrical Engineer to join our Traction Power Rail team.

This position assists assigned department by performing basic engineering-related tasks including research, development, design and delivery on assigned project(s).

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Electrical Engineering tasks related to rail systems and transportation infrastructure including substations, transmission and distribution systems, pump stations, switch rooms, passenger stations and power generators.

Additional Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with more experienced engineers and contribute to engineering designs for projects

  • Perform design calculations and conduct investigative analyses toward completion of assigned design tasks, and direct preparation of design specifications for power related work

  • Organize scheduling of specific tasks and assignments

  • Utilize Excel to produce spreadsheets and calculations

  • Produce cost estimates for electrical work

  • Assist with power system studies, DC electrified railway systems

  • Design auxiliary power and switchgear systems in a transit environment.

  • Generate traction power specifications and design drawings.

  • Assists in the preparation of computer simulations and studies including DC load flow, short-circuit availability, motor-starting, and protective relay coordination studies.

  • Perform site investigations in substations and along railroad tracks.

  • Develop technical reports

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical Engineering

  • Emphasis or concentration in Power Systems

  • EIT Certification

  • Previous internship or co-op experience

  • Interest in Transit and Rail projects

  • Experience in design, installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, MicroStation and Mathcad

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Contributes to the preparation or modification of reports, plans and designs for projects.

  • Assists in the preparation of project quantity and cost estimates.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
